Who needs media liability insurance?

Five creator audiences, and what insurers say about writing coverage for them. This page describes how providers position their products. It is educational, not advice about whether you should buy coverage.

Musicians

Releasing music means publishing content: recordings, videos, lyrics, artwork, and promotion. Beazley lists Music among the industries its media liability product targets, and Kinsale lists recording studios among its target classes. Markel's 2026 media and entertainment products are aimed in part at entertainment-focused businesses. Insurers describe these offerings as addressing claims such as defamation, copyright and trademark infringement, and invasion of privacy arising from media activities.

Podcasters

Podcasting is spoken-word publishing, distributed to potentially large audiences through feeds and platforms. Kinsale names podcasters directly among the target classes for its professional media liability product. Markel's Media Shield and Entertainment Shield are described as being for qualified content creators and media professionals. Statements made on a show, and music or clips used in episodes, are the kinds of content these products are built around.

YouTubers and creators

Video and social publishing is one of the most explicitly named segments in the market. Beazley says its media liability offering addresses social influencers and content creators; Kinsale lists bloggers, vloggers, influencers, and content creators among its target classes; and Markel describes its products as designed for qualified content creators. Brand deals, sponsored segments, and audience-scale distribution are part of why insurers name this segment directly.

Indie filmmakers

Film and video production has its own long-standing E&O tradition. Beazley addresses film and TV errors and omissions; AXIS lists media E&O and film and entertainment E&O with target classes including documentaries, feature films, and TV programs; and PHLY offers Film and Program Producer endorsements. Distribution, festival exhibition, and streaming release are the stages these products contemplate.

Indie labels

Labels publish and distribute recordings made by other artists, which adds another party's content to the business's risk profile. Beazley lists Music among its target industries, Kinsale lists recording studios among its classes, and Markel aims its entertainment products at entertainment-focused businesses. The same content-based perils, defamation, IP infringement, privacy claims, recur across these descriptions.

A note on fit: insurer target classes describe whom providers market to, not whom they will insure or who needs coverage. Whether media liability insurance fits a particular creator depends on their activities, contracts, and risk tolerance. For guidance about a specific situation, consult a licensed insurance professional or attorney. This directory does not give advice, quotes, or recommendations.
